I'm embarrassed to note that my town, once famous for its artists and writers, now hosts a Thomas Kinkade gallery, while what was once a romantic "sleepy fishing village" a few short decades ago, has been painted up to look like what the boosters think it was, and staffed with cartoonish cutouts of service workers whipped into cheerfulness. We are surrounded with banal representations, digital and architectural, rather than the real and honest things people once made with imagination, heart and practiced skill. Being surrounded with artifice zombifies souls and creates a vacuum ready for blind acceptance of any horror.
